Ford was one of the first automakers to release an American-built Hybrid - the Ford Escape Hybrid in 2004. Since then, they've worked tirelessly to bring drivers the most fuel-efficient, environmentally-friendly and fun-to-drive vehicles possible. So it's no surprise that the Ford Fusion Hybrid, set to arrive later this year, has already garnered widespread notoriety for its low gas mileage and stylish design.

And, Ford has high hopes for the new hybrid. And while we think it would be quite the feat for the Blue Oval to unseat the world's leader in hybrid technology, Toyota, we have no doubts that it can be done.

But, how? Let's start with 47 mpg city/44 mpg highway. Plus, Ford now has 461 patents related to their gasoline-electric powertrains. By 2020, Ford expects that their hybrids, plug-in vehicles, and EVs will account for somewhere between 10 and 25 percent of their global sales. Suffice it to say, they're well-prepared to take on the Japanese giant.

Chuck Gray, Chief Engineer for hybrid and electric powertrains says, "It's good for the customer, and we like to have this competition."¹ In other words: if Ford is working towards beating the best-of-the-best, then Ford drivers can expect only top-notch technology in their vehicles.

Plus, efficient driving is better for everybody. So, it makes sense that as of last year, the two automakers announced a collaboration on a hybrid system that would be better suited for heavy-duty trucks and large SUVs.
